U.S.S. San Francisco (SSN-711) On January 08, 2005 the U.S.S. San Francisco, a Los Angeles class nuclear-powered attack submarine, hit a seamount 420 miles south east of Guam at a depth of 525 feet at flank speed. The forward ballast tanks were ruptured. 98 crewmen were injured and Joseph Allen Ashley MM2 (SS) died. SUBSAFE was critical to the submarine’s safe return. The bow was replaced with decommissioned submarine Honolulu’s (SSN-718) bow and was returned to service in 2009. She was converted to a moored training ship in 2016 and decommissioned in 2022.
National Submarine Memorial, West is located just north of U.S. Submarine Veterans Highway on the exterior grounds of Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station.
