SLOSV About Us
WHO WE ARE: We are all United States Submariners! Whether currently Active, Retired, Reserve or a Honorably discharged veteran, we all were and some still are members of the elite underseas fighting force of the United States Navy. We are all volunteers who passed stringent testing, challenging training and we proved our mettle when we earned the coveted designation "QUALIFIED IN SUBMARINES". Whether your dolphins are gold or silver, there is no expiration date on the back of that precious pin.
San Luis Obispo Submarine Veterans (SLOSV) was established on April 12, 2006. It is the local Base for the United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. (USSVI.ORG). More information on this national organization can be found by clicking on that header above. We are an organization for submariners, active or retired. The organization has by-laws and an executive board that guides the activities and finances. It is not registered with the California Secretary of State as a charitable organization nor is it registered with the Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit organization. That is because we are a self-funded organization for the benefit and enjoyment of members and support the charitable foundation of the USSVI, which is a 501c(3), and community activities as agreed upon.
Meetings are held on the second Saturday of each month at 10:45 to 14:00 behind the American Legion Post 136 clubhouse at 417 Orchard Street Arroyo Grande, Ca. (near A.G. High School). Lunch is provided at a reasonable cost.
Please give us a walk in visit or get more information by addressing your question to our point of contact, Base Commander/POC: Matthew “Pete” Gallagher III, by clicking on the tri-bar menue bar, top right and select “Contact Us”.
Membership dues for the SLOSUBVETS is $20 per year. Membership dues for the USSVI IS $30 per year.
U.S.S. SCORPION (SSN-589) Was a Skipjack class nuclear-powered attack submarine that was lost 400 miles southwest of the Azores on May 21, 1968 with the loss of 99 submariners. The last communication from the Scorpion said that it was trailing a Russian Echo II type submarine. In 2000, The Russian Echo II class submarine Kursk, sank in the Barents Sea, with loss of all hands.
A memorial for all lost American submarines and their crews is dedicated at Cal. State University Fresno. Each sub has a marker with the boats name and when it was lost and each marker is at the base of a tulip tree along a beautiful pathway through the campus.
